Llandrindod Wells failed in their bid to reach the Central Wales Cup Final after falling 4-2 to Caersws at Rhayader Town’s Weirglodd last Wednesday night. But they bowed out of the competition with heads held high after two late goals eventually saw The Bluebirds through to a Final meeting with arch rivals, Newtown.

Dillon Browne struck early for Caersws converting a low cross from the left and Tommy Rowlands soon added a second with a clever finish from Rhys Hesden’s through ball.

Caersws looked to be well in control but switched off and Llandrindod were right back in it with two goals of their own just before half-time.

First Jack Evans and Stuart Williams combined down the left and when Williams picked out Reuben Edwards he found inspirational captain, Shaun Nicholls who scored at the far post. Two minutes later The Spa men were level with the excellent Jack Evans scoring with a free-kick which deceived Caersws ‘ keeper, Max Williams.

Caersws again saw the lion’s share of possession in the second half and pressed but a well disciplined Llandrindod defended superbly to deny them any clear cut chances. It looked very much as if the tie would go to penalties but Caersws got their vital third goal on 88 minutes when Browne tapped in from close range following a challenge with Llandrindod ‘keeper, James Barker. There was no way back for a valiant Llandrindod and Caersws added a fourth in stoppage time when Thomas Edwards played Rhys Hesden in on the right and he slotted home.

In the other semi-final, Newtown needed penalties to see off Llanidloes Town who so almost caused an upset. Newtown had young ‘keeper, Andrei Nazaru sent off after just two minutes and Josh Jones put The Daffs ahead. Louis Jacobs drew Newtown level ten minutes into the second half and that was how it remained until they prevailed 5-3 in the shoot out with stand-in ‘keeper, Archie Davies emerging as their hero.

While Llandrindod Wells and Knighton will contest the Aspidistra Radnorshire Cup Final on Easter Monday, this season’s Banwy Fuels Montgomeryshire Cup Final is between Llanrhaeadr and Four Crosses. Llanrhaeadr ran out 2-0 winners at Carno on Sunday with a goal in each half from Billy Clarke and Will Howard.

Four Crosses beat Llanfair United 2-1 in midweek with first half goals from Archie Burton and Isaac Dawson while Tomos Jones gained a late consolation for Llanfair from the penalty spot.
