A sportsman from Powys is making big strides in the world of footvolley on the international stage.
Daine Morris, who spends his time back in the UK with his grandparents in Crickhowell, has won a national tournament in Spain and is set to represent the UK at an international event next month.
Daine was six years old he left the Crickhowell area to live in Tenerife. He continues to spend term times in Tenerife and returns to Wales during the holidays.
Unfortunately, Daine has not been able to return home for almost a year due to Covud restrictions.
While in Tenerife, Daine took up the game of footvolley and now plays internationally representing the UK.
On the weekend of July 3 and 4, Daine clinched the championship of the Silver category of the Spanish National Ranking Tournament in Valencia, and is becoming a hot talent in the world of footvolley.
Apart from his individual achievements, Daine is currently competing in Italy and will also be in Germany and Austria representing the United Kingdom at the European Footvolley Championships August this year.
Unlike many other UK footvolley players, Daine, who speaks fluent Spanish, has the advantage of having great weather and accessible beaches all year yound where he trains and hones his craft in Costa Adeje, Tenerife.What is footvolley?• Sport created by Octavio de Moraes in 1965 in Brazil.• Combines aspects of beach volleyball and association football.• Similar to beachvolley, except that players are not allowed to use their hands and a football replaces the volleyball.• A maximum of 3 touches are allowed on each side before the ball must be sent over to the opponents side.• No player is allowed to touch the ball consecutively at any point in the game.• Points are awarded if the ball hits the ground in the opponents court, if the opponents commit a fault, or if they fail to return the ball over the net. • Played 2 vs 2 on an sand court with the net standing at approximtely 2.15m.• In recent years, professional football players have taken up footvolley in both promotional events and celebrity matches. Some notable Brazilian footballers who have played (or still play) footvolley include Romário and Ronaldo.• The first International Footvolley event to occur outside of Brazil was in 2003 by the United States Footvolley Association on Miami Beach at the 2003 Fitness Festival. • This event led to international players and teams in pursuit of federation status. A tournament was held during the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, as a demonstration sport.
