A MEMBER of Brecon Triathlon Club has won all five championship events in the super veteran age group this year.
Groundsman Mike Pfeiffer from Llanstephan, Brecon kicked off his triathlon campaign in the spring and first won at the Llanelli Sprint Triathlon, before winning the Bala Middle distance event centred around Lake Bala in Gwynedd.
His final event was the Broadhaven standard distance in June and also took first place in the Harlech Duathlon and Port Eiras aquathon.
All triathlons start with a swim, followed by a bike ride before ending with a run. Triathletes race against the clock which starts with the swim and stops when you cross the finish line after the run.
Race distances vary but the three common distances are the sprint, which is the shortest and fastest; standard, the distance used in the Olympics and middle, sometimes knows as the half iron.
Two other multi-sport events make up the 50-year-old’s complete championship, a duathlon which involves cycling and running only and an aquathon, which is swimming and running.
Brecon Triathlon Club secretary Richard Walters said: "Becoming Welsh champion three times over at the different distances in triathlon is a fantastic achievement. Mike only took up the sport in his late 40s and he is a real inspiration to club members.
"Mike’s an outstanding runner but his recent progress on the swim and bike sections has really paid off this year."
