Builth Wells 31 Seven Sisters 10
The Bulls got their league campaign off to a flying start with a hard fought win against Seven Sisters on the Groe on Saturday. The visitors started the strongest taking control of the scrums from early on in the match, but Builth kept resolute in defence , and from an attacking line Bulls hooker Ben Pugh went over for a try which was converted by new number 10 Dan Davies.
The score really lifted the Builth pack and they started to take control and from another attacking line out history repeated itself again with Pugh scoring in the corner again but the attempted conversion was unsuccessful.
Seven sisters had their best passage of play of the match with forwards and backs combining well resulting in a try under the posts. Shortly after the restart the Sisters were awarded a penalty which was successfully converted .
At this point of the match the Bulls has to find another level of fitness to control the Sisters new attacking energy. The home side showed good defence and were reward with two penalties which former Llandovery outside half Davies successfully converted to ensure the teams would change ends with the score 18-10 in the host’s favour.
Seven Sisters threw everything at the Builth to to start the second half but the Bulls defence stood tall with Waynne Morris leading the tackle count. This defensive display finally broke the Sisters and their discipline had gone resulting in Davies kicking a further two penalties.
Builth were now in complete control of the match the early dominance of the Sisters scrum had gone and the Bulls front five were now in complete control .
The try of the match come from a lose kick from the Sisters fullback. Harry Jenkinson leapt up like Tigger to collect the ball in mid air and because of his brave attacking choice cut through the Sisters to score under the posts, with Davies again adding the extras.
A 16-point haul and his clever tactical awareness to take control of the game earned Davies the Man of the Match accolade on his league debut for the Bulls. First team head coach Ben Duggan said: “I’m very pleased with a fantastic team performance and the defence today just empowers the whole team.”
Builth travel to Breconshire rivals Ystradgynlais on Saturday for a 2.30pm kick-off.
The Swansea Valley side also got their 2 West Central campaign off to a winning start traveling to Morriston and heading back up the valley with a 21-32 victory.
