Kington Golf Club marked a milestone in its centenary year with its annual “Drive-In” ceremony on Sunday, January 18, as outgoing club captains handed over to their successors for the 2026 season.

The event saw Men’s Captain Tom Ammonds, Ladies’ Captain Kay Taylor, Senior Captain Chris Amass, and Junior Captain Josh Alderton drive out of office, while incoming Men’s Captain Nigel Scott, Ladies’ Captain Sue Purslow, Senior Captain Alan Beeves, and Josh Alderton - continuing in his role as Junior Captain - ‘drove in’ to their new positions.

More than 100 members, families, and guests attended the ceremony.

The outgoing captains signed off their year with a significant charitable contribution, presenting more than £31,000 to Cardiac Risk in the Young (Kieran Joyce Memorial Fund) and St Michael’s Hospice. A large proportion of these funds - around £11,000 - was raised during the Joint Captains’ Charity Day alone.

Speaking at the presentation, Tom Ammonds said: “Words cannot express our gratitude for your generosity in 2025.

“Without your support, these enormous sums of money would not have been achievable. You should all be very proud - I know we are. It’s unbelievable.”

Club Chairman Philip Jones also praised the efforts of the captains and members.

“At Kington we are blessed with a wonderful golf course that is highly rated throughout the country, but one of our greatest assets is the generosity and support of our membership,” he said.

“We have seen tremendous growth over the last few years, which is fitting as we celebrate our centenary.

“We have many exciting events planned, and the 2025 Captains have led a tremendous fundraising campaign. The charities are astounded by the sums presented today.

“On behalf of the club, I wish our Centenary Captains every success for 2026 - it is clear that our members and friends are right behind them.”
