Builth Youth 32 Pontyclun 5
THE second league fixture of the season saw Builth Youth play host to Pontyclun, who having recently beaten Beddau, who Builth lost to, were sure to be a tough opposition.
A solid start from the home team saw them firmly inside the opposition’s half from the kick-off and quickly rewarded with a penalty for a high tackle. Steffan Towns comfortably slotted the ball between the sticks for an early 3-0 lead.
A competent and controlled start from Builth saw them awarded a second penalty just 10 minutess later after Pontyclun were caught offside from a Builth line out and again Towns put it safely over to extend the lead to six points.
Pontyclun found it hard to get any rhythm going and were up against it with Builth piling on the pressure. A number of missed opportunities from Builth should have seen them extend their lead but they did finally find their way over the line when a scrum just inside their own half saw a setpiece from the backs give winger Evan Lee the ball and break through three players to give the Bulls their first try with Towns converting.
With Builth looking comfortable they were reminded of the quality of their opposition when Pontyclun found some space and broke up the wing and a simple inside pass put their flanker in for a try, right on half time.
The second half started with just one change for Builth at scrum half. Continuing as they started Builth were solid in defence giving a solid platform for some great ball carrying from centre Spencer Harvard-Pratt. The forwards stood their ground from some aggressive play from a frustrated Pontyclun, holding firm in the scrum with Captain Toby Lloyd leading by example and putting in a great shift at flanker.
Builth’s second try soon followed when full back Ryan Jones chipped over for new scrum half Connor Grannell, putting ball through hands Steffan Towns got in at the corner, but unable to convert.
As the changes were gradually introduced all subs for Builth stepped up and momentum stayed with the Bulls. A continued assured performance delivered yet another try when a Builth scrum out wide set up a patient display moving the ball full width of the pitch and getting a Evan Lee over for his second try. Not to be outdone Steffan Towns also gained his second try of the match after the forwards bulldozered their way upfield and Towns cutting a line to break the defense getting Builth’s vital 4th try and bonus point followed by another conversion.
Final score 32-5. Man of match was awarded to Builth’s very own iron man Toby Lloyd.
Builth Youth’s next match will be at Dowlais in the Blues Cup on Saturday, October 6.
