WITH the help of Gwernyfed RFC and Powys Sports Development, the local WRU rugby HUB Officers are hoping to get more girls interested in rugby.

The partnership have organised a schools festival of girls rugby that will take place at Trefecca Road on April 15 with entires open for girls aged six to 15 years-old.

There will be four categories - U9s and U11s, who will both take part in six a side tag rugby; U13s, who will play 10 a side tag rugby and the U15s, who will play 10 a side rugby.

Nick Davies, Brecon High School’s rugby officer said: "The intention of the day is to develop basic skills and team work in a fun environment and in all age groups, the refs, if required, will assist in allowing the games to happen, especially in the younger age groups. There will be unlimited squad sizes and roll on, roll off substitutions."

The games will start at approximately 10.15am for the U9 and U11s and aim to be finished by 1.30pm. For the U13s and U15s will start by 11am and concluded by 2.15pm.

"The hope is that after the festival, as many girls as possible will want to join up for the new girls only rugby team - the South Powys Red Kites," said Nick.

The Red Kites will run from April though to July and will be based at Gwernyfed RFC and will include schools, rugby clubs and youth groups in the area.

Nick added: "Girls of all abilities and experiences are invited to take part in a fun new sport. At training sessions there will be various forms of the game for all abilities and experiences including tag, touch, early contact and contact. There will also be matches against other cluster centres regionally and nationally which will begin in May.

"Training will begin on Friday April 22 at Gwernyfed RFC between 5.30 to 6.30pm. We are also recruiting volunteer coaches, first aiders and team managers."
