GWERNYFED Ladies entertained sea siders Barry and turned in a very accomplished performance.

The home side soon established themselves as they drove into the Barry defence, using the strength of having a trio of strong runners in forwards Lily Snape, Kate Pridie and Del Thomas who all made good ground but importantly presented clean ball, allied to good support by their fellow forwards, this allowed scrum half Sian Dyke to release the home sides backs at will.

From one of these forays, outside half Jess Owens went close and from the resulting scrum number eight Rosie Jones drove and committed the defence allowing prop Lily Snape to take the recycled ball to plough over the line. The try was well converted by Owens and within minutes, Jones taking a quick penalty caught Barry napping and ever present flanker Kate Roby was on hand to secure another seven pointer.

With Gwernyfed totally dominating possession and outside half Owens cleverly pinning Barry back with the boot, centre Megan Snape straightened the line and sprinted in from 30

yards to cross under the posts allowing an easy conversion to take the score to 21-0.

Facing up to a large deficit Barry at last found there feet with their outside half and centre making good ground with powerful runs the game turned on its head for the next 20

minutes. A yellow card for a home forward saw Barry take the initiative with a converted try as the half closed.

The first fifteen minutes of the second half was all Barry as Gwernyfed’s penalty count rose with at least ten penalties being awarded against them allowing Barry to pressurise the home line and good handling and forward drives saw two further unconverted tries to see the score clawed back to 17-21.

With the ball been kicked deep and good following up tackling from a resultant scrum number 10 Jess Owens spotted a gap and sliced through to score much to the relief of the sizeable home crowd.

With Welsh Senior Trialist Lily Snape, Rosie Jones and fullback Evie Jones all showing great fitness and work rate, and leading the way Gwernyfed tore out of defence with the number eight taking advantage of another strong run by Snape to be on hand to take the ball and outstrip the Barry defence as she brought up the fifth home try again. Converted by outside half Owens for a personal Tally of 13 points

The final score of 33-17 to the home side was welcomed by the home coaches and apart from the loss of discipline for a quarter of the game were extremely delighted with the control and hard work and fitness of the whole side and for Barry they will regroup for the return league match this month and will again be a stern test for the Gwernyfed Ladies.
