GWERNYFED Ladies have secured their first win on their return to the WRU Women’s Premiership.
The women fell to a heavy opening day defeat but in their first home game last year’s division one champions produced a high tempo performance to defeat Seven Sisters who were last year’s beaten plate finalists.
Six different Gwernyfed players ran in tries to secure a bonus point victory.
Seven Sisters were, valiant in defence, and hung on at times but where always unable to reduce an early lead.
Gwernyfed centres Lauren Dixon and Becky Wriggley each scored tries in an impressive performance from the backs who held their shape.
Wings Georgia Williams and Caitlin Pugh linked well with fullback Evie Jones. There was no drifting in and out of the game, no rash decisions, just direct running initiated from half backs Sian Dyke and Jess Owen, who orchestrated the link between forwards and backs.
In total five of the backs scored, Owen from a pop pass to crash over from five metres, wing Pugh, who was a constant presence in support received a pass fired out to her to tee up Kirsty Prosser.
The only forward try came from a dynamic and thrusting run by prop Lily Snape, after being fed from Bronnie Jones.
Off the bench came a mixed bag of youth and experience.
Young Kayleigh Jones entertained the crowd with a few rasping tackles, and Polly Harries in the second row and a changed back row Kelly Watkins and Courtney Bailey helped shore up the forwards with a late and spirited fight back by the visitors by being in the thick of the action.
The final score was a well-earned victory of 32-15.
“The scrum is going well, with a lot of fight,” said Gwernyfed scrum coach Pete Owen: “We have worked hard on the set piece, and today all the hard work paid off, they are a motivated group.”
