The cup holders kept on track for a place in the 2026 SRC Cup semi-finals with this comfortable win over the struggling Wizards, writes Huw S Thomas.

ABERAVON 12 - LLANDOVERY 43

After the double bonus point win over Swansea and this facile victory, the Drovers are already on 12 points in Pool B and look likely to finish in the top two and so qualify for the semi-finals on February 28.

Aberavon - still shaken by the recent departure of stressed coach Jason Hyatt - looked lacklustre and rudderless at times and limped to their second successive cup defeat following their 15-14 slip-up at Bridgend.

Without changing into top gear Llandovery ran in seven tries, which included a brace apiece from hooker Cameron Lewis and wing Llien Morgan and coasted to one of their biggest ever wins at the Talbot Athletic Ground.

Lewis, back on his old stomping ground, had his best game since signing for the Drovers, lock Joe Powell and Griff Evans had the line-outs sewn up, Harri Doel sparked on the wing, half backs Lee Rees and Ioan Hughes were always in the action and Evan Sheldon and Osian Davies did grand work as ball carriers.

Rees and Hughes have developed into the outstanding partnership half-back partnership in the SRC and it will be hard to replace the unit after its break up at the end of the season when Rees retires.

Luckily Llandovery have George MacDonald - currently out with concussion for three weeks - waiting in the wings.

MacDonald has inherited the fierce competitiveness of his father, Chris - the former Narberth and Swansea scrum-half - and, blessed with a far quicker turn of foot, promises to be an excellent replacement for the quicksilver Rees.

Aberavon seemed to rely heavily on the carrying power of No 8 Ashton Evans but once that threat was nullified, they seemed wanting in any attacking ideas.

When wing Connor Moyse gave them an instant lead with one of the fastest tries ever scored on the famous old ground - taking advantage of a Llandovery misfield at kick-off - that proved to be the best moment of the game for the Wizards.

The visitors replied almost immediately with Lewis powering through poor tackling and the back division posed a constant threat to the home defence before further scores from Davies and Lewis underlined the superior work of the Drovers pack at close quarters.

Moyse did score his second try after poor Llandovery defensive alignment had allowed the wing to go over, but that was as good as it got for the Wizards.

The try of the game followed when skipper and scrum half Rees pumped a cross kick from one side of the field to the other for Morgan to acrobatically gather and twist over.

Busy flanker Tiaan Sparrow added a fifth Llandovery try for a 31-12 interval lead and it looked as if the floodgates might open.

Aberavon, however, succeeded in slowing down ball and defended well behind the scrum for 25 minutes, but when wing Felix Gilbert was yellow carded for offside, the Drovers upped the tempo.

Rees put in a delightful grubber to send Morgan in before replacement scrum half Lucca Setaro did the same to put replacement wing Ned Bennett over.

The cup continues with Bridgend the visitors to Church Bank this Saturday, kick-off at 1:30pm.
