Brecon’s Rob Davies claimed a silver medal at the ITTF World Para Challenger in Slovenia last week, marking another strong performance on the international stage.
The former Paralympic champion, competing in the men’s class 1 singles, stormed through the early rounds of the tournament in Lasko with a series of strong wins. He beat Russia’s Dmitrii Lavrov 3-1 before dispatching South Korea’s Jeong Sang Gu in straight sets—11-3, 16-14, 11-9—in the group stages.
Davies kept that momentum into the knockout rounds, defeating Hungary’s Adam Urlauber 3-0 in the quarter-finals and Finland’s World No.11 Timo Natunen by the same scoreline in the semis.
But the rematch with Jeong Sang Gu in the final proved a tougher challenge. After a slow start, Davies rallied to level the match at 1-1, but the Korean took control and went on to win 3-1.
“I just didn’t get into gear to be honest,” said Davies, competing in his first tournament since taking silver in the Paris Paralympics last year.
“I struggled with the conditions and just didn’t have the feeling I had in the tournament earlier on. I don’t have any excuses – he deserved to win. I feel that I’m playing better than I was in Paris, but I couldn’t put it into that match.
“This should give me confidence although I’m a bit gutted now but hopefully I can build on this and try and have another good tournament next week.”
The silver medal adds to Davies’ long list of international achievements and comes as part of a strong showing by the British team, who took home 12 medals. Golds were won by Bly Twomey (women’s class 6-7), Jack Hunter-Spivey (men’s class 4-5), Martin Perry (men’s class 6), Will Bayley (men’s class 7), Aaron McKibbin (men’s class 8) and Joshua Stacey (men’s class 9).
