Just one week after winning the Powys schools cross country title Brecon AC’s Tiegan Ward stepped up to the mark again last Wednesday – this time competing in a 3km time trial on the track at Newport.

With places in the Welsh team to contest the three-mile London Mini Marathon event at stake, Tiegan set off at a hot pace mixing it with three South Wales athletes. Despite the freezing conditions Tiegan finished in 11 minutes four seconds and qualified for the Welsh team as the first East Wales finisher.

Jack Organ also ran a very fast and committed race but unlike Tiegan he didn’t benefit from the new regional selection system and will have to wait for results from the other two regional trials to see whether he will qualify as a fastest loser for the eight ‘man’ team in his U13 age group. Also in this age group Cian Aplin ran a personal best time and was well in contention until the final laps when he faded slightly.

Iwan Coyle ran a good time while competing in the U15 age race but was edged out of Welsh selection by a slightly faster athlete from Blaenau Gwent.

Sam Clayton in the U17’s also ran a personal best time while U13’s Ava Nicholl and Martha Eacock found the going tough but will have benefitted from the experience and be stronger in future.
