A 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder following the death of a Brecon man after violent disorder near Pontypool.

Gwent Police said the man, from the Torfaen area, was arrested and remains in custody for questioning.

Anthony ‘Tony’ Jones, 56, died in hospital from injuries sustained during the incident in Pontnewynydd on Thursday, August 6.

Mr Jones’s family paid tribute to him this week, describing him as a much-loved husband, father and grandfather.

Gwent Police said 25 men have now been arrested in connection with the reported violent disorder.

The men, aged between 18 and 73, were arrested for offences connected with the disorder.

Six are currently in police custody, while 19 have been released on bail as enquiries continue.

Detective Superintendent Laura Bartley, the senior investigating officer, said the murder investigation had resulted in a “significant number of arrests” involving people believed to be connected to the initial report of violent disorder.

She said officers had also located a Ford Transit van which police had previously appealed for information about.

The van was found outside the Gwent area and is being assessed to establish how it relates to the investigation.

Officers have also located Anthony Paul Jones and will speak to him in connection with their enquiries.

Det Supt Bartley said: “Firstly our thoughts remain with the family of Anthony ‘Tony’ Jones at this difficult time for them.

“We have since launched a murder investigation, resulting in a significant number of arrests for people who we believe are connected to the initial report of violent disorder.”

She said the investigation had caused “substantial disruption” within local communities.

“We are extremely grateful for the patience, support and co-operation shown by our communities while this work continues,” she said.

“I would still urge anyone who has information to contact us as the details that you might hold could assist our ability to bring those responsible to justice.”

Police have previously said they believe the violent disorder involved members of two rival Outlaw Motorcycle Clubs, the Vikings and the Hells Angels.
