The ladies of Aberhonddu Angels WI and other local WI groups have been very busy over the last few months knitting, crocheting and felting poppies - with the results of their efforts put on display on St Mary’s Church in Brecon.

A cascade of poppies now falls down the wall in remembrance of those who lost their lives in war.

One of Aberhonddu Angels WI’s long-standing members, Fiona Morgan, came up with the idea for the display several months ago.

Fiona, a former member of the Women’s Royal Naval Service (WRNS), has worked with the Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Airforce as a civil servant, and she wanted to do something special to mark Remembrance Day.

Over the summer and into autumn, WI members from all over the district got behind the project and helped create more than 3000 poppies. More volunteers then spent a good few hours tying them on to the cargo net.

The end result is a stunning display which Mayor Cllr David Meredith, Major and Mrs Gurung, Brigadier Andrew Dawes and Fay Jones MP were all present to see hauled into place.

They were delighted with the piece and congratulated the WI members present, who included Louisa Robertson (president), Sarah Ross (secretary) and Fiona Morgan.
