AN independent review to establish just how many county councillors are needed in Powys should be conducted.

That's the view of the council's own membership - who were asked to vote for a cull of councillors by Liberal Democrat group leader, Councillor John Morris.

The Crickhowell member put a motion before the full 73 member council asking it 'urge' Welsh local government minister Leslie Griffiths to consider a further reduction to the number of county councillors in Powys.

Ms Griffiths has already agreed to reduce the membership of Powys County Council to 64. Cllr Morris said reducing the number of councillors could save the authority half a million pounds a year.

Councillors agreed rather than writing to Ms Griffiths they would ask the independent boundary commission to assess the impact of reducing the council's membership to less than 64.
