Campaigners opposed to a proposed wind farm on the Epynt are planning to display an 80-metre turbine blade on South Epynt common.

Amddiffyn Mynydd Epynt (AME) and Here Be Dragons will stage the demonstration on Sunday, October 18, as part of an effort to show residents the scale of the turbines proposed for the area.

Bute Energy's Garreg Fawr Energy Park proposal includes 22 turbines, which could reach up to 220 metres in height.

The groups have made a full-size 80m model of one of the proposed blades using calico, with craftswomen sewing the material together using an industrial sewing machine.

They say 32 volunteers will be needed to carry the structure using lightweight poles placed at 2.5-metre intervals.

The groups are describing the demonstration as an act of “craftivism” and say it is intended to help people visualise how much space the turbines would occupy in the landscape.

Project leader and AME craftswoman Sophie Jauncey said: “This feels like an essential piece in the bigger picture of our continued efforts to communicate to local people the scale of what we are facing.”

AME spokesperson Mark Collins added: “In line with our aim to protect the Epynt commons and determination to inform local people of Bute Energy’s proposals, we have been pleased to contribute both funding and volunteer effort to this informative demonstration of the sheer size of the turbines. Seeing the full size model displayed in the threatened landscape will be a powerful way to help people visualise the impact.”

The first display will take place on South Epynt Common between Pentrefelin and Llanfinhangel Nant Bran on Sunday, October 18, with a drop-in session between 2pm and 4pm. Everyone is welcome to attend and see the display. The exactly location is What3Words: heartless.swerving.down, grid reference SN9295433459.
