Carwyn Phillips - better known on the running scene as “Caz the Hat” - marked an emotional milestone at this year’s Dragon’s Back Race.
The Powys runner, from just outside the Bannau Brycheiniog National Park, has been part of every edition of the gruelling six-day ultra since 2015 - four times as a competitor and five times as a volunteer. Known for his trademark smile and generosity, he has become woven into the spirit of the event.
This year, Caz lined up with his daughter Carolyn, who is following in his footsteps as an ultra-runner. The pair ran side by side through the early stages, supporting each other mile after mile across Wales’ toughest terrain.
But on Day 4, Carolyn suffered a suspected stress fracture and was forced to withdraw. Caz pressed on alone, determined to finish what they had started together.
On Saturday afternoon, he crossed the Cardiff Castle finish line to an emotional reunion, greeted by a tearful but proud Carolyn.
