A much-loved Christmas film is set to take on new life in Brecon this December, as Scrooge (1951), starring Alastair Sim, will be screened at Theatr Brycheiniog with its original score performed live.
The one-night-only performance, Scrooge Live, takes place on Thursday, December 11 at 7:30pm, with music performed by the FB Pocket Orchestra. The show forms part of a 16-date UK tour that brings the festive classic to audiences in a completely new way.
The orchestra’s musical director, Paul Stevenson, has spent months painstakingly transcribing the score by hand, restoring Richard Addinsell’s original compositions and sound effects to be played live in perfect synchronisation with the film.
Gulbenkian Arts Directors praised Stevenson’s work, saying: “In a labour of love, Paul Stevenson, the Musical Director of FB Pocket Orchestra, has painstakingly transcribed the Scrooge Score line by line. The work of arranging lost scores is vital to preserving cinematic history. Happily, composer Richard Addinsell’s vision has been restored through the work of brilliant arrangers like Stevenson.”
Ollie Corbin, co-director of the FB Pocket Orchestra and promoter, said the tour would offer audiences something truly special.
“Scrooge Live is a new and totally unique way to experience this classic film,” he said.
“The musical arrangement has taken months of planning and with our UK tour just a few weeks away we are excited to welcome audiences at venues across the country.
“Whilst the film has seen numerous remakes over the past years there is something special about an original production and it has been an honour to use our musical skills that will bring to life a true Christmas classic.”
Tickets are available now from the Theatr Brycheiniog website and via the box office, with adult prices starting from £18. Family and concession tickets are also available.
