Powys County Council has appealed to residents who can provide a spare bedroom to a young person to come forward.

The authority is urgently appealing for supported lodgings hosts to provide a room, to guide and mentor young people between 16 – 25 years old in Powys, who have previously been in foster care or at risk of becoming homeless.  

 There is a particular need for hosts in and around the Presteigne and Knighton area, to enable young people to continue to live in their community, attend their local school and sporting activities.

You will receive a financial reward, training and support - and the satisfaction of making a difference to the lives of young people who may otherwise face homelessness.  

Cllr Rachel Powell, Cabinet Member with responsibility for Children’s Services said: “By becoming a supported lodgings host you will add a significant contribution to a young person’s life, with your on-going support, as well as creating a sense of belonging, in order for them to gain confidence and important life skills for their futures.  

 “So, I’m calling on the people of Powys, in particular in the Presteigne and Knighton area to support the young people in your community who have previously been in foster care and could be at risk of becoming homeless.

Supported lodgings services provide a young person with a room of their own in a private home where they are a member of the household, but are not expected to become a member of the family. The householder, or host, provides a safe and supportive environment, working alongside professional services to help and support the young person in gaining skills for independent adult life. Some people take part in supported lodging if they are unsure if they are ready to foster.
