POWYS County Council has warned people not to enter Llandrindod lake after a build up of blue-green algae was detected within its waters.

Contact with water with high concentrations of blue-green algae, also known as cyanobacteria, can cause skin problems and swallowing the water or algae can cause stomach upsets or more serious health effects.

The council has said that water aeration equipment will be installed in the lake in the coming days as a preventative measure to ensure the lake does not suffer a depletion in oxygen levels as a result of the prolonged warm weather the UK is currently experiencing.

In 2006 many fish died at the lake because of a lack of oxygen caused by a bloom of the algae.

A spokesman for Powys County council said: "To prevent a repeat of what happened in 2006, the council will be putting this equipment into place to ensure that the lake remains oxygenated at all times. Officers will continue to monitor the situation until the algae diminishes."
