A BRECONSHIRE woman has spoken of her distress at learning her elderly and immobile husband's domiciliary care package was being stopped with no replacement.

Carys Hamilton, who lives in Llangynidr with her 81-year-old husband Sam has spoken of her worry after receiving the bombshell a week before Christmas that when her husband, who is disabled and confined to a wheelchair, came home from a week's respite care he would no longer have a care package in place.

While it has been confirmed this week by Powys County Council that a new care package has been put in place for Sam, the delay has caused Carys, like many others in the same situation, to wonder what the future will hold: "Sam had gone into respite care for a week's break at Greenhill Residential Home, in Crickhowell from December 15 and was due home on the 22nd. We have had carers come into our home to look after Sam for the last five years but in recent times, support has been provided more frequently because of his worsening condition.

"On the 19th I took a call from a social worker in Brecon to say that Sam's care package would no longer be in place when he came out on the 22nd. As you can imagine I was totally distraught and didn't know where to turn, especially as I was told that no alternative had been found.

"Fortunately, the staff at Greenhill, who have been brilliant throughout this ordeal, said Sam could stay at the home until a care package had been put in place which I was extremely grateful for."

Speaking on Tuesday, January 20, a spokesman for Powys County Council said: "There was a delay in getting a care package in place for the Hamilton family and in discussions with them it was agreed that Mr Hamilton should remain in respite care. We are happy to confirm that a new care package is now in place."
