Knighton Market enjoyed an excellent turnout on Friday, December 5, with McCartneys reporting the sale of 2,534 store sheep.

The event attracted strong demand throughout, with prices averaging £108.35 per head and top lambs reaching £150.

Prize classes, judged by Owen Probert and sponsored by DRE Accountants, recognised the best pens in several categories. M & M Meredith won the award for best pen of Suffolk-sired lambs, while NT Davies claimed the top Continental-sired pen. The best Mule lambs were awarded to Messrs Jones, and AD Powell took the prize for best Hillbred lambs.

Strong Mule ram lambs from Messrs Jones sold to £150 and £140, while other top-quality lambs exceeded £130 per head. Notable prices included £135.50 for Southdown wether lambs from RD & JM Ransome, £135 for Texel X mixed lambs from NT Davies, and similar prices for Texel X ewe lambs from CE Tudge & Son. Texel X mixed lambs from P & K Court and CA Webster & Son reached £133 per head.

Hillbred lambs also sold well, with Welsh ram lambs reaching £118 per head from B Watkins & Son, £116.50 from JW Bevan, and £114 from AD Powell. G & M Davies sold Welsh ram lambs at £113.50. Continental X and Suffolk X lambs were particularly in demand, though all types found buyers, with medium and longer-term lambs trading steadily.

Overall, prices reflected size and type: large Continental X and Suffolk X lambs sold for £130-£150, medium for £100-£120, and smaller or longer-term lambs for £70-£90. Large Mule lambs achieved £130-£150, with medium at £100-£115 and smaller at £60-£95. Hillbred lambs ranged from £110-£118 for the largest, £95-£105 for medium, and £60-£95 for smaller or longer-term lambs.
