A former motocross champion from Powys has completed an extraordinary sporting double nearly half a century after first making Welsh sporting history.

Howey resident Alan Bates first became Welsh Motocross Champion at the age of just 18 – a record set 46 years ago that still stands today.

During a distinguished motorcycling career, he also won the British Enduro title four times, represented Britain nine times and claimed two gold medals at the International Six Day Enduro.

Now, decades later, Mr Bates has achieved another Welsh title in a completely different sport.

Representing the Radnorshire Indoor Bowling Association, he was crowned the 2025/26 Welsh Senior Singles Indoor Bowls Champion at Newport after a convincing victory in the final.
