Volunteers from across Powys were celebrated at a special afternoon tea hosted by William Watkins, High Sheriff of Powys, as part of Volunteers’ Week.
The event, held at the Severn Arms Hotel in Penybont, brought together volunteers from the Powys Befriending Service to recognise their contribution to tackling loneliness and social isolation.
Guests enjoyed a traditional afternoon tea, met fellow volunteers and shared their experiences. The celebration was made possible through the generous support of Radnor Hills.
During the event, the High Sheriff presented volunteers with thank-you cards and commemorative pin badges.
Volunteer Stella Constant said: “I’ve had a wonderful time meeting other volunteers today.
"I've volunteered with Powys Befriending Service for four years and have had the privilege of supporting six lovely people who have led fascinating lives. I get just as much from the experience as they do."
Powys Befriending Service, delivered by Powys Association of Voluntary Organisations (PAVO) and funded by the Powys Regional Partnership Board, has 73 volunteers supporting people aged 50 and over experiencing loneliness through home visits, phone calls and group activities that help them stay connected and build social links.
William Watkins, High Sheriff of Powys, said: "It was a pleasure to welcome volunteers from across Powys and thank them for their dedication and service.
"The impact of volunteering is often far greater than people realise. By giving their time, these volunteers help tackle loneliness and improve wellbeing. Their contribution is invaluable."
Clair Swales, PAVO CEO, said: "We are incredibly grateful to our Powys Befriending Service volunteers and were delighted to celebrate their contribution during Volunteers' Week.
"I would also like to thank the volunteers who were unable to attend today, and Radnor Hills for their generous support."
Derek Emery, who has volunteered for two years, said: "The service creates genuine friendships because volunteers are carefully matched with people who share similar interests.”
"The person I support smiles much more than they used to.”
