The Bank Holiday Monday sunshine provided the perfect backdrop as Cil y Cwm agricultural show (Sioe Cilycwm Show 2025) returned to the picturesque Erryd Fields, a few miles from Llandovery.
Set against the stunning banks of the River Towy, the show drew hundreds of visitors who came to enjoy one of the Upper Towy Valley’s best-loved community events.
This year’s president, Arwyn Richards of Plasnewyyd, was kept busy throughout the afternoon, handing out trophies and rosettes to the leading competitors in the equine and sheep sections. Among the livestock winners were John Thomas, who claimed the best exhibit in the in-hand horse classes with his Welsh Part-bred Arab Sports Horse, Frankie Phillips, who took the honours in the ridden section, and Gareth Jones, who enjoyed success in the sheep classes.
The show was once again described as a “classic rural event”, celebrating the area’s farming heritage and countryside traditions. Alongside the livestock competitions, the programme featured sheepdog trials, a popular dog show, children’s sports, craft displays, a vintage vehicle parade and traditional games such as quoits. The hotly contested tug-of-war proved a favourite, drawing big crowds and plenty of noisy support.
One of the day’s standout attractions was the Ras y Fforest, which set off at 3pm from the showground. The four-mile race tested runners with a tough climb up the valley ridge, but rewarded them with breathtaking views before a fast descent brought them back to the finish line in front of the show crowds.
