A community transport scheme that has helped hundreds of people get to vital medical appointments is appealing for more volunteers after securing the backing of a local business.

Knighton & Area Community Transport Scheme has received sponsorship from Radnor Hills for its electric community car, as it looks to expand the service it provides across the area.

The volunteer-run charity was set up in August last year to help people without access to transport attend hospital and medical appointments.

Organisers have helped hundreds of people but say they have been unable to meet demand because they do not have enough volunteers.

Andrew Craggs, chair of trustees for the scheme, said the support from Radnor Hills was greatly appreciated.

"It means so much to have the support of Radnor Hills and for them to sponsor our community car," he said.

“Since we launched we have helped hundreds of people to get to appointments as far away as Gobowen, Clun and Hereford but there are too many rides we haven’t been able to do.

“We have an amazing team of volunteers, but we desperately need more.”

The scheme is looking for more volunteer drivers, who can claim 45p a mile, as well as coordinators to help match drivers with passengers. Volunteers to help with social media and administration are also needed.

Mr Craggs said one volunteer driver, who had recently retired and moved to Knighton, described joining the scheme as "a life saver" because it had helped him meet new people and make friends.

"Our hope is for the scheme to grow and offer much more to the community, but it cannot do that without the people to help," he said.

Chris Butler, marketing manager at Radnor Hills, said the company was proud to support the scheme.

"We're based in a very rural area, just down the road from the Knighton & Area Community Transport Scheme, so it's an amazing partnership for us," he said.
