Kyle Harding, son of popular local figure Mark ‘Tiny’ Harding, is nearing completion of his 5k-a-day running challenge in aid of Prostate Cancer UK, held in honour of his dad who has been battling the disease.

Kyle has been running 5km every day throughout October and has already raised more than £1,000 for the charity.

Kyle’s dad, Tiny, was given the devastating news in September 2024 that he had prostate cancer, and was soon after told that it had spread to his lymph nodes and bones. He also recently suffered a heart attack, from which he is now recovering.

Tiny is currently at stage four, and Kyle wanted to do something to make him proud.

“I came across Prostate United on Facebook and, obviously, because Dad has got it, I thought it would be a good challenge - something I never would have thought about doing before,” Kyle told the Brecon & Radnor Express.

Despite battling blisters, Kyle has stayed motivated with support from friends and family joining him on runs, as well as by taking part in Brecon’s parkrun.

He has also been updating his Facebook page daily with posts tracking his progress, including a game between him and Tiny where they name their favourite football players to wear the number corresponding to the day of Kyle’s challenge.

On day 22, Kyle even managed to set a personal best, finishing in under 30 minutes.

Now that Kyle is nearing completion, preparations are under way for the final day of the challenge - a walk with friends and family from Hay-on-Wye Football Club to Talgarth Football Club, two local teams with close ties to the Harding family.

The walking group will stop at The Old Railway Line Garden Centre in Three Cocks, which has supported Tiny’s fundraising, now totalling over £13,000.

Talking about completing the challenge, Kyle said: “I think it’s going to feel fantastic, to be honest. We’ve nearly hit the target number of miles, so I’m going to smash that before even finishing, and to have already raised £1,000 has blown it out of the park. It already feels fantastic, and finishing it will feel even better.

“I couldn’t think of anything better to have done, to be honest. I wanted to actually challenge myself, and it’s all been worth it at the end of the day.”

Speaking about his son’s achievement, Tiny said: “I’m proud beyond words of him. He’s a top, top son and has been getting the awareness out there which I feel is more important than the money being raised itself.”

Tiny hopes to join Kyle and the team for the final stretch of their walk to Talgarth on Friday, October 31, if he is fit enough.
