A team of volunteer ambassadors in Builth Wells have become Cancer Champions after completing specialist training aimed at boosting early cancer detection in the community.
The group, who support the local ‘5K Your Way: Move Against Cancer’ (5KYW) initiative, took part in a training session run by the Lingen Davies Cancer Fund following their latest 5km event at The Groe on Saturday, April 26.
Now fully qualified, the ambassadors will use their new roles to raise awareness of cancer symptoms, promote screening, and encourage people to seek help early - a move they hope will save lives across Mid Wales.
Sue Ling, the lead ambassador for the Groe 5KYW group, and newly qualified Cancer Champion, explained: “The 5K Your Way initiative is a peer support group with a difference, open to anyone impacted by cancer.
“We find that coming together on the last Saturday of the month - and in between for those of us who want to get together more often - often involves a lot of talking and sharing of experiences.
“Becoming Cancer Champions is the perfect next step in offering more to those who need it.”
Sue added: “Many of us have personal experience of being impacted by cancer and are more than happy to be a listening ear, have conversations and raise awareness to help reduce the impact of caner where we can.”
The Groe 5K Your Way group meets at 9am on the last Saturday of each month at the Groe parkrun in Builth Wells (LD2 3BL), with a meet-up by the blue flag at 8:45am. Open to anyone affected by cancer – including patients, families, friends and healthcare professionals – the event welcomes everone. Afterward, participants are invited for a cuppa and a chat at the Strand Café.
