New play pods are being introduced across Powys to give children and families more opportunities to enjoy free and accessible activities in their local communities.
The scheme follows the success of the original play pod in Machynlleth, which was developed through the Powys Together project. The project is funded by the Powys Regional Partnership Board to provide free activities in disadvantaged areas of north Powys.
New pods have now been installed in Knighton and Brecon, with another due to arrive in Ystradgynlais at the end of the summer.
The play pods have been funded through a Welsh Government Children and Communities grant and provide equipment that can be used by families, community groups and local organisations.
In Brecon, the pod at The Uplands has already hosted several play sessions and has also been used by Brecon Youth Club.
One parent said: “Wow, what amazing things you have. I can’t wait to bring my children to more sessions.”
The Brecon pod was also used for a National Play Day event on August 5, organised by Powys County Council’s Flying Start team, Powys Together and Brecon Youth Club.
More sessions will be held during the school holidays, with Flying Start and Powys Together continuing to provide play opportunities for families in Brecon and other communities.
Powys County Council deputy leader Councillor Matthew Dorrance said the pods were “a fantastic way of bringing play into the heart of our communities”.
He said they gave children access to resources that encouraged “imagination, movement, confidence and fun”, while helping families and local groups come together.
Community groups are also being encouraged to make use of the equipment, with the pods designed to be shared.
