A Senedd Member has raised concerns after reports of people becoming unwell following swimming in the River Tawe.

Rebeca Phillips, MS for Brycheiniog Tawe Nedd, told the Senedd that residents in the Swansea Valley had reported cases of illness, including among children, after entering the river in recent weeks.

She said she welcomed the Welsh Government’s commitment to improving pollution data and water quality, but asked for assurances that the incidents would be fully investigated in partnership with Natural Resources Wales and Dŵr Cymru.

First Minister Rhun ap Iorwerth said he was “aware of and concerned” by the reports.

“I have asked Natural Resources Wales to investigate the reports,” he said. “I will provide an update when further information becomes available.”

He added that he would work with all relevant bodies “to ensure a joined-up approach to any investigations and associated responses.”
