Conservative candidate Tyler Chambers is calling for urgent action to tackle speeding through rural villages in the Llanyre with Nantmel ward.
He says residents in Nant Glas, St Harmon and Abbeycwmhir have raised repeated concerns about traffic speeds, warning that it is “only a matter of time” before someone is seriously injured.
Mr Chambers, who is standing in the Llanyre with Nantmel ward by-election on July 2, said the issue has come up consistently on the doorstep, with families, older residents and parents of young children saying they feel unsafe on village roads.
"People are worried about their children walking to school. They're worried about older residents trying to cross the road. They're worried about families simply trying to enjoy a walk through the village," said Mr Chambers.
"And with so many of our rural paths being difficult to walk along, the road itself is often the only option. That makes the speeding problem even more serious. These are real worries from people, and they have been raising them for years."
Mr Chambers said the problem has been made worse by vehicles cutting through the villages at dangerous speeds.
He has criticised Powys County Council's Lib Dem-run administration for “failing to act on concerns that local residents have been raising for years”.
"These concerns have gone unheard for too long. Enough is enough,” he said.
Mr Chambers said that if elected on July 2, he will push for practical, community-led traffic-calming measures to be introduced where they are needed most, working directly with residents in Nant Glas, St Harmon, Abbeycwmhir and across the ward to identify the most dangerous spots and press for solutions.
"This isn't complicated,” he said. “We know where the problems are because local people have been pointing them out for years. What has been missing is a councillor who will actually listen and keep pushing until something is done.
"Everyone should feel safe walking outside their own front door. Every child should be able to walk to school without their parents worrying. That is not too much to ask, and it is exactly what I will be fighting for."
