A Powys nurse has been recognised for her outstanding work supporting young people with mental health needs.

Tanya Thomas, Team Leader for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) in Powys, was named Mental Health Nurse of the Year at last month’s RCN Wales Nurse of the Year Awards.

Ms Thomas has played a leading role in establishing and managing the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services Crisis Hwb in Powys, a dedicated service for young people experiencing mental health crises. Since its launch, the Hwb has been credited with a 25 per cent reduction in hospital attendances for mental health concerns among local young people.

Colleagues praised her leadership and commitment, highlighting her work in recruiting staff, overseeing the development of welcoming facilities, and creating a service centred on the needs of young people. Feedback from patients and their families has been overwhelmingly positive.

A spokesperson for Powys Teaching Health Board said: “Tanya leads by example and is always on hand to offer support and advice. She continues to work with young people and never shies away from getting involved to support those who need help most.

“Tanya always has the patients’ best interests at heart and will go above and beyond to ensure that not only their mental health needs are met, but that all aspects of their lives are being supported.

“Everyone at PTHB is extremely proud of the work that Tanya and her colleagues carry out and this award is well deserved.”

Jackie Davies, Chair of the RCN Wales Board said: “The RCN Wales Nurse of the Year Awards are a powerful celebration of the compassion, innovation and professionalism that define nursing in Wales.

“They shine a spotlight on the individuals who go above and beyond every day-often quietly and without recognition – to improve lives and lead positive change.”
