ALL 13 existing secondary schools in Powys are to be kept open under new plans drawn up by the council but hopes of establishing a Welsh medium high school have been dashed.
However Powys County Council does intend establishing Welsh medium only sixth forms at Builth Wells High School and at Caereinion High School in the north of the county from September 2015.
The cabinet member for schools, Councillor Stephen Hayes - who unveiled the proposals which are the result of an informal consultation held earlier this year - said the authority has been told it is free to strip English language provision from the sixth forms without needing to gain the approval of the Welsh Government.
