Work has been completed on more than £500,000 of upgrades at Llandrindod Wells Sports Centre, including a new all-weather pitch and energy-saving improvements to the sports hall.
The centre, which is run by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Powys County Council, has seen its ageing 20-year-old astro turf replaced with a new 2G surface designed for multi-sport use and year-round activity.
The previous pitch had begun to flood regularly, limiting its usability.
The new surface is intended to improve playing quality and support clubs, schools and community users across a wider range of sports.
At the sports hall, structural work has also been carried out after safety issues were identified last year. Defective brickwork has been addressed and the building has been fitted with new external cladding.
The council says the improvements will create a safer environment for pupils at Ysgol Calon Cymru’s Llandrindod Wells campus, as well as for members of the public using the facilities.
The cladding, along with previously installed LED floodlighting at the pitch, is also expected to reduce energy use at the site, with savings of around 15,000 kWh a year – about 60 per cent of the electricity previously needed to light the pitch for community use.
The works have been funded through Powys County Council’s capital budget.
Cllr Raiff Devlin, Powys County Council’s Cabinet Member for Customers, Digital and Community Services, said: “This work marks a significant investment in the infrastructure of Llandrindod Wells Sports Centre and ensures continued access to high-quality indoor and outdoor facilities for schools and the community.
“It also underlines our continuing commitment to maintaining and improving facilities that encourage participation in sport and physical activity across all ages and abilities.”
Richard Gealy, General Manager for Llandrindod Wells Sports Centre, said: “The previous astro turf pitch had served the community extremely well for over 20 years and was central to the activities of so many clubs, schools and teams during that time. This new 2G pitch is an exciting step forward, ensuring we can continue to offer a high-quality, versatile facility for a wide range of users.
“Alongside this, the improvements to the sports hall, including the structural enhancements and new energy-efficient cladding, as well as the upgraded LED floodlighting, mean the entire site is now more sustainable and better equipped to meet the needs of the community for many years to come.”
