The management team at Llangorse Lake have reintroduced temporary restrictions on certain water-based activities on the lake due to the reappearance of blue-green algae in the water.

“Unfortunately, due to visible blue-green algae, we have reintroduced restrictions on immersive activities on Llangorse Lake,” said a spokesperson for the lake.

“We’re hopeful this bloom will again be short-lived! Our ultrasound devices typically clear blooms quickly, though they only start having an impact once blue green algae is in the water.”

Double trouble

Llangorse Lake experienced blooms of blue-green algae earlier this month on Friday, 10 July, but it was quickly dispersed and the restrictions were lifted on Wednesday, 15 July.

Temporary restrictions were placed on the lake’s watersports.

The restrictions

The same as last time, the team have put restrictions on immersive water activities. The currently banned activities are: Paddleboarding, canoeing, kayaking, waterskiing, wakeboarding, and other immersive water sports.

Rowing boats, pedals and fishing boats are still permitted as they are low water contact activities.

The dangers

According to Natural Resources Wales blue-green algae can cause skin irritation, stomach issues, and is especially harmful to children and pets if ingested.
