THREE theatres in Brecon and Radnorshire have been saved from the immediate axe - but still face significant budget cuts.

Brecon's Theatr Brycheiniog, the Wyeside Arts Centre in Builth Wells and the Ystradgynlais Miners Welfare Hall could have all faced closure if Powys County Council had withdrawn all its funding support from next year.

But the authority has instead agreed to cut its budgets for the three venues, as well as Newtown's Hafren theatre, by 40 per cent from April 2016.

The council has yet to say how it will make up the savings, which it initially intended achieving by making a 100 percent cut to the theatre budgets from April 2016.
