UPDATE: A further yellow thunderstorm warning has now been issued for Thursday, covering the whole of Powys and much of Wales. The updated warning is included below.

Thunderstorms and heavy rain are set to affect Powys and the surrounding area, with yellow weather warnings now in place for both Wednesday and Thursday.

The Met Office has issued a yellow thunderstorm warning for parts of Powys and the border from 3am until 10pm on Wednesday.

Areas covered include Knighton and Presteigne, while Kington is also within the warning area. Hay-on-Wye is close to its western edge.

A band of heavy showers and thunderstorms is expected to move northwards during Wednesday morning.

A drier and brighter spell could follow, although further showers and thunderstorms may develop during the afternoon.

The Met Office warned that many places will miss the worst of the weather, but where storms do occur they could bring intense rainfall, with 20-30mm possible in less than an hour and 40-50mm in two to three hours in some areas.

Surface water flooding is possible, while large hail and frequent lightning could also cause disruption.

The showers and thunderstorms are expected to move northwards and ease during the evening.

But a further warning has now been issued for Thursday, covering the entirety of Powys and much of Wales.

The second yellow thunderstorm warning comes into force at 6am on Thursday and remains in place until 10pm.

The Met Office said a band of thunderstorms and heavy rain would move north across England and Wales, potentially becoming slow-moving during the afternoon and evening.

Rainfall totals of 20-30mm in three hours are expected fairly widely, with up to 50mm possible in some places over 12 hours.

There is a small chance that some areas could receive more than 50mm in three hours and more than 75mm over 12 hours, particularly over east-facing high ground.

Lightning and hail measuring 1-2cm are also listed as potential hazards.

The Met Office said the conditions could lead to some disruption.
