A block of toilets in a small village that has an estimated 17,000+ visitors has been re-vamped, all thanks to team effort from the local community.
They've even had raving Google reviews from those who have visited, with a 4.5-star review average.
Recent reviews on Google include one person saying the toilets should be awarded toilet of the year.
‘Fabulous upgrade of these toilets that are essential to my journey from South Wales to Welshpool. Thanks so much.’
‘Deserves toilet of the year award they have the cleanest, best looked after toilet. Keep going Erwood’
‘A big thank you to the local community who have kept this facility open and updated. A 24 hour facility which is clean and tidy, and where you don't need a particular denomination of coin to use, is very much appreciated by me and my family. Thank you!’
‘Public toilets on the A470. Looked after by the community. Always clean and well stocked. Make a donation in appreciation of the efforts of the locals who care for this facility and to pay for the materials necessary to maintain them. You'll also find a book repository in the bus shelter.’
When toilets throughout Powys were being closed, those in Erwood were saved thanks to the actions of local residents, the Community Council and Kirsty Williams, then the local member of the Senedd.
Since 2015 the Erwood Pit Stop Trust have managed the cleaning and maintenance, with accounting support generously provided by Clark & Co. of Builth. With help from the YFC and others, they even succeeded in keeping the toilets open throughout the pandemic for the benefit of key workers and the ‘blue-light’ services. The toilets continue to be open 24/7.
Now the toilets have been given a whole new look. Users are delighted that they have been re-vamped to a very high standard by local builder Rob Williams, thanks to donations from the public and the annual support of the Welsh Government. Visitors have often left comments about how clean the toilets always are – but now they are delighted that the newly upgraded toilets look magnificent too.
Thanks to the dogged determination of the Trustees to keep the toilets open, clean and maintained, the over 17,000 users who make a Pit Stop in Erwood every year can now sit pretty in one of the very best community toilets in Powys.
