A Powys volunteer who turned her own experience of feeling isolated as a parent into support for other families is being highlighted during Volunteers’ Week.
Diana, who volunteers with Home-Start Cymru, is being recognised as part of a nationwide celebration of the charity’s volunteer network, which works with families across Wales who are facing difficult circumstances.
Home-Start Cymru says volunteers provide practical help, emotional support and regular companionship to parents, helping to reduce isolation and build confidence within family life.
For Diana, the decision to get involved came after her own experience of loneliness while living abroad as a parent. She said that experience helped her understand how much of a difference even small support can make.
“I wanted to give something back, and I realised even a small amount of support can make a real difference to a family,” she said.
She added that volunteering has also had a positive impact on her own wellbeing.
“My confidence has definitely improved. It helps my mental health and gives me a sense of purpose,” she said.
Leon, National Volunteering and Development Lead at Home-Start Cymru, said volunteers like Diana bring both empathy and lived experience to their role.
“Diana’s journey highlights the unique value that volunteers bring to Home-Start Cymru,” he said.
“Having experienced the challenges of parenthood herself, she understands how much difference it can make when someone is there to listen, encourage, and walk alongside you.
“Volunteers like Diana bring empathy, compassion, and lived experience that help families feel supported, valued, and less alone.”
Home-Start Cymru is using Volunteers’ Week to thank its existing volunteers and encourage others to come forward and join its network of family support volunteers.
