Powys council’s cabinet has agreed to close two secondary schools - the latest decision in a round of proposed closures it kickstarted in February.
The council will now issue the legal notice needed to close both Builth Wells and Llandrindod high schools.
The cabinet agreed in February it would consult on the plan to close both schools as well as now ditched plans to close Brecon and Gwernyfed high schools.
The cabinet has also been considering the future of two village primary schools in Radnorshire.
We’ve compiled this guide to all of the recent school decisions taken by the independent-controlled council’s ruling cabinet.
Builth Wells High School and Llandrindod High School
The cabinet agreed on Tuesday it will publish statutory notices to close both schools in August 2018. It will then create one new school to operate over both sites from September 2018.
The council’s original plan was a new school would be established from September 2017 but the cabinet member for education, Cllr Arwel Jones, said it has been decided to take an extra year to set up the new comprehensive.
The full council had voted, on September 8, in support of a motion that called for the schools to be given an additional two years to find ways to work together to avoid closure. However that decision wasn’t binding on the cabinet.
It was also stated at Tuesday’s cabinet meeting the authority is no longer planning to build a new single-sited school in Builth Wells.
Once the statutory notices are published there will be a period of time for further comments from the public, parents and governors to be submitted. Those comments will then be considered by the cabinet before it is asked to confirm the closure decision.
Brecon High School and Gwernyfed High School
Cllr Jones said in September following the publication of the consultation report into closing both schools those plans would be abandoned.
On Tuesday cabinet formally dropped the plan to close both schools and replace them with a new secondary, without a sixth form, at Brecon.
Instead the council will seek funding for a new 11-18 school building in Brecon as well as funding for improvements to the Gwernyfed campus in Three Cocks.
The cabinet has agreed to increase the budget for the new school at Brecon by £8m - and it seeking funding from the Welsh Government’s 21 century schools programme.
A further report on the future of both Gwernyfed and Brecon high schools will brought to the cabinet in November.
Brecon High Welsh language stream
Another consultation on removing the Welsh language stream from Brecon High School will take place.
Removing the stream from Brecon and delivering education through Welsh at the Builth Wells campus of the proposed new two-sited secondary school for mid Powys was considered as part of the proposals agreed in February.
But despite dropping most of its original plans for Brecon High the cabinet is pressing ahead with its proposals on the future of the Welsh stream.
Cabinet members were told the council’s legal advice is that it should rerun the consultation on the Welsh stream - and this will take place after the October half term.
Llanbister County Primary and Llanfihangel Rhydithon County PrimaryIt was originally intended to close both of the small primary schools but those plans have now been abandoned. It was announced in early September that a rise in pupil numbers could save Llanbister from closure and Llanfihangel Rhydithon school in Dolau has now been given a reprieve as well.Another report with recommendations for both schools will now come back to the cabinet before the end of November. Cllr Jones said there is still concern at the "sustainability" of both schools, in particular about securing a permanent model of leadership that will lead to an improvement in standards. You can watch the near four hour cabinet meeting by clicking here For a report from the cabinet meeting see this week's Brecon & Radnor Express - on sale now
