As the Easter edition of the Brecon and Radnor Express is taking shape, we have had a welcome burst of warm, sunny weather.
As a consequence, the early lambs are skipping in the fields around the Black Mountains and in the foothills of the Beacons. Meanwhile, only weeks after the feast of our Patron Saint, St David, the approach roads to our Powys market towns have daffodils in abundance along the verges, serving as a potent symbol of fresh hope, life and optimism, even in these most turbulent of times.
However, despite our best efforts to foster that hope, the global order has become even more fragile lately, with the US - Israeli action against the tyrannical régime in Iran leading to escalating bloodshed and serious economic shocks across the globe. I know that departments across Powys County Council are already recalibrating their 'in year' budgets, to take account of escalating fuel and energy costs in the delivery of essential services.
As Christians around the world prepare for Easter, the situation in Palestine also remains dire, although the mainstream media tends to lose interest and to move on, just as they have with our allies under fire in Ukraine. In the run up to Easter, I hope that we will keep their needs very much in mind.
Our Welsh traditions of fighting extremism and oppression and giving sanctuary to those fleeing violence go back to the Spanish Civil War and the rise of Nazism, with communities from Ystradgynlais to Presteigne and Rhayader to Hay-on-Wye all making their contribution. Rather than demonising the weak and the vulnerable and scapegoating them for the shortcomings of others or our own, we should renew our commitment to both in these troubled times.
Before we go into the 'white heat 'of the Senedd campaign, which already seems to have been going on for ever, there is a precious time to spend time with families and loved ones, whilst reflecting on what really matters in our lives. Should you wish to be in touch, please don't hesitate to do so on: [email protected]; on Facebook @WilliamPowellLD or on X @WmPowell2021
In the meantime, I would like to wish all Brecon and Radnor Express readers, of all faiths and none, a very Happy Easter.
Pasg Hapus,
William
