MORE than 100 schoolchildren from South Powys took part in an athletics day at Penlan on Thursday, June 22.
The event was the Quadkids multi-events team competition, organised jointly by Brecon AC, Sport Powys and Welsh Athletics.
The school teams competed in mixed teams, with every competitor doing a 75m sprint, 600m run, standing long jump and vortex howler throw. The day finished off with a fun shuttle relay.
There were nine schools taking part: Priory, Cradoc, Dyffryn y Glowyr, Crickhowell, Clyro, Knighton, Llangors, Llanelwedd and Hay-on-Wye.
There were some excellent performances on the day, but most importantly, the young athletes had great fun at the track and many got to experience their very first athletics competition.
One participant said the best part of the day was “making new friends from other schools and being part of a team, as that meant that even if you don’t win a race yourself, you can still win something with your team”.
The overall winner of the day was Llangors, with Dyffryn y Glowyr second and Llanelwedd third. The winning girls’ team was Dyffryn y Glowyr and winning boys’ team was Llangors.
The best individual girl’s score covering the four disciplines was recorded by Daisy Jenkins (Crickhowell) and the best individual boy’s score was by Jack Organ (Llangors). The event was also a good example of excellent partnership working between Sport Powys, Brecon Athletic Club and Welsh Athletics; all three organisations have worked hard behind the scenes to organise this event.
These events could not take place without the volunteer officials; we are fortunate to have such a willing and capable group of people who help provide primary school athletes with such great opportunities to experience athletics.
