THE bank holiday weekend saw Brecon Cricket Club 1sts in action twice.

On Saturday it was a nine-wicket reverse at Sudbrook and on Monday at home to Tondu a victory by the same margin - their first win of the season.

Both games saw Brecon opener Rhys Pritchard in fine form with the bat, notching up 63 on Saturday and a controlled 43 not out on Monday.

At Sudbrook, Pritchard received good support from Richard Lovering (26) and then Tom Wood with a busy 38 as Brecon set the home team 172 to win.

Sudbrook however had no problem in knocking off the runs with Matt Kinchin (86no) and Ross Lewis (54no) doing the damage.

On Monday Tondu really had no answer to Brecon’s bowling in damp conditions and were shot out for 85. Tom Jones (3-16), Sam Williams (2-12), Finn Starkey (2-15) and James Mitchell amongst the wickets.

Brecon’s opening pair Rhys Pritchard and Gethin Phillips saw the home team nearly home before Phillips fell for a stylish 37.

The 19 points gained enabled Brecon to move away from the lower reaction of the table.

On Saturday, the second team won the top of the league clash with Sudbrook 2nd team by two wickets reaching their target of 151 off the last but one ball of the game.

Anthony Cole with 72 ensured Sudbrook posted a challenging total in the damp conditions. John Cooke with 2-14 and Gethin Phillips (2-33) did the main damage for Brecon aided by three catches by Tom Witcomb, one of which was a very special effort.

Brecon in reply got away to a sound start with Mark Waldeck (10) and Rhodri Thomas (16) putting on 25.

The middle order led by Steve Kenchington aided by Rob Hudman (30) and Geth Phillips took Brecon to within touching distance of victory but then a fall of wickets meant it was left to Kenchington (40 no) to steer the home side to victory.

Brecon 1sts home game on bank holiday Monday was sponsored by Mitchell Meredith Chartered Accountants and Brecon 2nds’ game was sponsored by Youngs of Brecon Ltd.
