BRECON Cricket Club players have had the opportunity to cast off the winter cricket rust with two friendly matches before League fixtures start this Saturday, May 7.

The first game was away at Merthyr CC where the first team enjoyed an excellent day, none more so than James Hudson on debut for the Club. James had a day for the scrapbook with 117no (retired) and three wickets, with his off spin, as an 80 run win was recorded. Other players to make an impression were Gethin Phillips 46 and three wickets and last season’s prolific young player Rhys Pritchard with 24.

The second friendly saw the Club enjoy the excellent hospitality of Christ College where a fluctuating encounter saw a College bowling attack do well to restrict Brecon to 129 in their innings.

For Brecon Matt Williams and Ryan Morgan were amongst the runs and Rhys Pritchard again contributed. In Christ Colleges reply Tom Wood gave the innings a high energy start before Ryan Morgan with four wickets, Fin Starkey with two wickets and Matt Williams with three wickets, for no runs, turned things in Brecon’s favour. Tom Witcomb and Ben Kenchington also took a wicket each.

Christ College fought hard to the end led by Harry Copp but fell agonisingly short, however cricket was the only winner on the day when so many young players on both sides showed their skills.

The Glamorgan and Monmouth League season starts next Saturday with the first team entertaining Malpas, starting 12.30pm and the second team away at Machen.
