BRECON Cricket Club played host to the Breconshire Mixed Kwik Cricket Primary School finals last week.
Hosted jointly by Cricket Wales and Powys Sport Development 5x60 officers, children attended at the event on Tuesday, June 21.
An impressive number of entries were received, with a total of 10 schools taking part with 18 teams in total. All schools were divided into three groups, and the highest placed eight teams played off in a quarter final round, while the other schools played off to determine the placings from nine to 18.
After some close games in the quarters, the semi finals had Llanbedr Church in Wales School playing Cradoc Primary, and Llanfaes CP School playing Mount Street.
Llanfaes just edged out Mount Street with some tight bowling to progress to the final, but it was the second semi that could of gone either way. Batting first Cradoc scored a well paced 253, which Llanbedr also scored at their turn to bat, only to be declared the loser as they had lost one wicket more.
The final started with Cradoc batting first and posting a score in excess of 260, with some big hitting boundaries scored. Llanfaes battled well and were always in the game early on, but some excellent catching from Cradoc produced nine wickets which Llanfaes could not recover from.
Matt James of Powys Sports Development said: "There has been a huge resurgence in schools cricket in South Powys over the last two years, and it’s fantastic to see so many children playing cricket."
Terry Dickson, cricket development officer said: "A massive thanks must be said for Brian Skinner and his team at Brecon Cricket Club for providing a well presented ground and also Brecon High School who have provided numerous students to score and umpire all competitions this summer, they have been great ambassadors for their school, and the community. We look forward to seeing them all again next year.
"Everyone wishes the winners of the South Powys Competitions all the best for the Girls South Wales Finals at Radyr Cricket Club on July 6, and the mixed finals at the SSE Swalec Stadium on 5."
Any children wishing to join the local junior section at Brecon Cricket Club are asked to get in touch with Terry Dickson on 07799267586 for training times and days.
