Hay ended their campaign in the Worcester Cricket League Division Eight (South) with a thrilling tie against border rivals, Kington, with both sides ending their 45 overs on 229 for 9.

Kington opted to bat and got off to a good start through openers Rhys Morgan (32) and Laura Wade (29). Henry Powell made 50 while Duncan Morgan (47) and Aiden Mills (26) also got runs against the bowling of Gareth Grant (3-20) and Rhydian Evans-Bevan (3-48).

Hay lost a few early wickets in reply to Jacob Houchin (3-22) and Aiden Mills (3-29) but the always reliable John Sly (79) revived their hopes. He was aided by Thomas Davies (49) who fell agonisingly short of his maiden half century. But young Johnny Price (11 not out) took Hay to the brink of victory and they needed five off the last over. It came down to two to win off the last ball and number eleven Gus Price managed to scramble a leg bye to tie the game. Hay have secured a creditable fourth-place finish in the league this year, while Kington had to settle for runners-up spot behind champions Luctonians.

Meanwhile, Builth Wells saw their Division Seven (South) clash at league leaders Woolhope abandoned because of the weather after 36 overs, with the hosts strongly placed on 254 for 4. Opener Matt Tayor was undefeated on 104 while Ali Park was 54 not out from just 24 balls when the heavens opened. Martin Hurst (2-56) had got rid of Dom Larkin (10), who is so often a thorn in the Bulls’ side, but Woolhope still looked on course for a big total.

Builth Wells, currently sitting fourth in the league table, still have two matches left to play — at home against Ledbury and away to Barnard’s Green.
