The recently formed Talybont Ospreys took on Hay-on-Wye Cricket Club on Sunday, 31 August.
Fielding first, the Ospreys opened the bowling with Andrew Jones. Jones got off to a positive start taking two wickets in his third over, one being a catch and the other bowled.
Following in Jones’ footsteps, Sam Harpur showcased some excellent bowling and took two wickets himself, and Tom Short took one wicket with a superb catch from Jules Tunnicliffe.
With Hay-on-wye having five players retire at a maximum of 30 runs, it was always going to be a big ask for the newly formed Talybont Ospreys.
Hay finished their innings with 196 runs.
Talybont’s Aled McDonough and Jules Tunniclife opened the batting for the Ospreys. Tunnicliffe was first out for 0, and McDonough followed for 5 runs, in a less than ideal start for the new boys.
Vice Captain for Talybont, Jo Harpur, entered the frame and ran up a steady 13 runs. Captain Tom Short put up an impressive display, retiring with 34 runs not out.
Richard James came in for Captain Tom and knocked a helpful 26 runs to make an indent into Hay’s lead.
Pete Buckingham chipped in with 12 runs, but unfortunately it wasn’t enough for the Ospreys. Talyont finished with 120 runs.
A special mention goes out to Kayden Bland, Will Thompson and Morgan Preece for their first ever game of cricket, which is what the club has been formed for, to encourage others to get out there and play.
Playing brilliantly all afternoon, Kayden Bland was named man of the match for the Ospreys.
This is still only the beginning for the Ospreys who took to the field for the very first time on Sunday, 20 July, against Llanfrynach Cricket Club in the very first edition of the the Dai Poulton Cup.
