TWO sisters from Crickhowell had reason to celebrate after two very different successes in the world of sport on the same day.

Older sister Kathryn Holley retained her bench title in Malta at the World Powerlifting Championships on Saturday, June 2. While on the same day her younger sister Sian finished 8th, and was third woman home, in the Dragon Seekers 60k race which finished at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

Kathryn and Sian are both former pupils of Crickhowell High School.

Kathryn lifted 92.5kg, beating her British record. Kathryn also made an attempt on the world record of 96.5kg, narrowly failing to lift that weight.

Kathryn, who teaches at Ebbw Fawr Primary Phase School in Ebbw Vale, says she is now aiming to break the world record at the European championships in September.

She said: “I managed to lift it off my chest but didn’t quite get it all the way! This is my hope now for September in the European championships held in Dublin. Kathryn also won the title for best overall lifter.

Kathryn and Sian’s mum Sandie, who still lives in Crickhowell said she was proud of both of her daughter’s achievements.

She said: “They both deserve recognition for all their hard work, involving months of training, as well as the results at the events themselves.”
