A YOUNG Brecon Corries team secured their place in the first round proper of the JD Welsh Cup with a dominant second half display over Abermule.
The Corries will face familiar opposition in the next round when they travel to face South Wales Alliance League rivals Sully Sports who currently sit just a point, and one place, below them in fourth. The seaside club defeated league rivals Cardiff Draconians 3-4.
Both teams are scheduled to meet in the league on October 20 the same weekend the cup match is due to be played.
Two second half goals secured the Corries’ place in the draw after neither the Corries or their visitors from Montgomeryshire could gain an advantage in the first half at the Rich Field.
But it was summer signing Joel Evans who broke the deadlock after 50 minutes. Evans signed for the Corries, from Brecon Northcote, with three of his brothers to play alongside eldest brother Dale at the Rich Field.
But the senior brother was one of several regulars missing from the Corries line up on Saturday though few are likely to have had an unusual weekend as the defender.
He was completing a trek up the Machu Picchu Inca trail in Peru in aid of the Cancer Research Wales charity.
Boss Damien Daniels used the cup tie to give some younger players an opportunity.
Loughborough University student Joe Cooper, from Crickhowell, took the chance with a goal 10 minutes from time to ensure the Corries, from tier five, would see their way past the well organised MMP Mid Wales League Division Two side as they negotiated the foothills of the Welsh Cup qualifying rounds.
