Knighton Town justified their tag as favourites for this season’s Aspidistra Radnorshire Cup by lifting the trophy with a 2-0 victory over Llandrindod Wells.

In front of a healthy Bank Holiday crowd at Rhayader Town’s Weirglodd, goals in each half from Kieran Dovey and Luke Boundford saw the Radnor Robins end an 18-year drought.

Players and spectators observed a minute’s silence prior to kick-off in memory of former referee Chris Bodenham, who sadly passed away last week.

Knighton dominated possession in the early stages of what proved a disappointing final for the neutral, and it was no surprise when they took the lead on 35 minutes.

Callum Stead had already gone close before the breakthrough came, as Llandrindod failed to clear a Ryan Jones cross from the right, allowing Kieran Dovey to volley home from the edge of the box.

Luke Boundford missed a glorious chance to double the lead after the break, firing over from close range.

At the other end, Llandrindod - without influential playmaker Jack Evans - created their only real opportunity when Tom Durant headed over from a cross by marauding full-back Stuart Williams.

Knighton sealed the win with 10 minutes remaining as Boundford converted from the penalty spot after Stead was brought down by goalkeeper James Barker.

Knighton might have added a third, with Boundford going close with a shot on the turn and substitute Sam Hoyle heading over, but by then the Radnorshire Cup was already theirs.

Knighton Town skipper Boundford received the trophy from Mrs Lynda Eaton on behalf of the competition sponsors, before celebrations began among the Robins’ supporters, who had waited nearly two decades for the moment.

The Radnor Robins had not lifted the county cup since defeating Gwernyfed in the 2007/08 final.
